Yesterday, Hon. Zaake bought several food items and packed them properly in polythene bags. He gave them to three individuals to deliver to selected families close to his home where people were starving. Like most Members of Parliament, he had been overwhelmed by calls from his constituents who have nothing to eat. He was not personally involved in the distribution of these items, although he purchased them and instructed the people he sent to deliver them from house to house so as not to go against the directives of the Ministry of Health. Although government suggested that leaders and other organisations donate through the Taskforce, the Taskforce has reached out to very few people. Every day since the start of this crisis, hundreds of people in Kyadondo East Constituency have been reaching out to Hon. Kyagulanyi for help and he has been finding ways to help them through means that do not pose any public health threat. In fact, a few days ago, police came to my gate and arrested people who had come to request for help. For four days now, these people are still being held at Kasangati Police station. Even a blind person can see that the Museveni regime decided to make a few food relief activities in Kampala and Wakiso because they feel very threatened by the people in those areas. People are starving countrywide. Therefore the arrest of Hon. Zaake and detention in a place yet to be established was not only illegal, it was yet another action of the Museveni regime targeting political opponents. We have all seen NRM MPs, Ministers and other leaders donating food surrounded by a multitude of people – pausing serious public health threats. We have seen ministers donate food donning NRM shirts and flagging the NRM sign whenever they went. Therefore, as People Power, we implore everyone to be alert and discern the intentions of the regime at every point. The regime has been looking for yet another opportunity to arrest Hon. Zaake so many times and this presented an opportunity to them. We have activated our legal teams to find ways of getting Hon. Zaake out of illegal detention as soon as possible. Secondly, We are working with other leaders not only to demand for his release, but also to demand that government stops using COVID19 as a political tool to promote its failed system and to target opponents.
